Focus on Fives
Focus on Fives is an engaging, activity-based program that helps students develop the skills they’ll need for first grade. Students receive age-appropriate introductions to science, social studies, handwriting, phonics, and reading. Fun learning activities help young students build a foundation in phonemic awareness, reading strategies, listening, and speaking. Students learn four key themes to shape their biblical worldview: God is great, and God is good; God created me and all things; the Bible is God’s Word, and it is true; and I learn in order to serve God and others.

How We Teach Focus on Fives
Learning Phonics
BJU Press phonics teaches students to associate individual letters and sounds. Then, it shows them how to recognize phonics patterns through word families. This two-part approach prepares students to engage more easily with the words they will encounter. This program also builds familiarity with high-frequency words, or service words, which do not follow normal phonics rules.
Shaping Biblical Worldview
Worldview shaping begins early by encouraging students to apply the four key themes addressed throughout the course: (1) God is great, and God is good; (2) God created me and all things; (3) the Bible is God’s Word, and it is true; and (4) I learn in order to serve God and others.
Objectives Drive Learning
Each science, heritage studies, phonics, and reading lesson includes learning objectives that align with all instruction and assessments.
Helping Young Minds Develop
Students stay engaged throughout the course through a variety of teaching strategies for all types of learners. Each lesson includes many opportunities for hands-on learning, discovery learning, intentional play, and visual learning.
