Handwriting
BJU Press’s handwriting product line guides students as they develop individualized handwriting that is natural, legible, and attractive. Beginning in K5 and Grade 1 with the formation of letters through patterns, students learn to write continuous-stroke letters, the foundation of both our precursive and cursive systems. In Grade 2, students develop a rhythm and flow that eases the transition to cursive writing. In each successive grade, students will continue to learn and reinforce natural, legible, and attractive handwriting. Activity pages with engaging themes and cross-curricular content give students opportunities to perfect their handwriting through supported practice, practice from memory, and creative writing. Grade 6 introduces artistic writing with calligraphy.

Course Overviews
Handwriting 1
A Foundation for Communication
Introduce your young learners to the personalized art of handwriting. Handwriting 1 helps students develop foundational handwriting skills to write fluently and accurately. Students will be able to match letters with their uppercase and lowercase counterparts, write neatly and legibly, use proper posture while writing, and write in PreCursive with consistent rhythm and speed.
How We Teach It
Step-by-Step Instructions
Students are first taught to recognize, trace, and write letters to develop their motor control in preparation for writing cursive in future grades. As letter formation is taught, letter names and sounds are also reinforced to develop reading and spelling skills. Playful characters and simple songs make the course content memorable and enjoyable for young students.
Repetitive Practice
Systematic practice helps students develop multiple components of their penmanship including letter formation, letter alignment, word spacing, neatness, and rhythm. Rather than emphasizing exact imitation, the course focuses on legibility and consistency in student writing.
Materials
Student Worktext
The student worktext pages provide opportunities for both teacher-guided practice and independent student practice. Students will have consistent opportunities to review forming numbers and uppercase and lowercase letters.
Teacher Edition
The teacher edition provides teaching tips and lesson instructions—including biblical application notes.
Handwriting 2
Expanding the Handwriting Toolkit
Guide your young learners toward greater mastery of a key building block of communication: handwriting. Handwriting 2 continues developing handwriting fluency in PreCursive and introduces cursive writing, which has been linked to reading comprehension and is deemed mandatory instruction in a growing number of states. Students will be able to match letters to uppercase and lowercase counterparts along with PreCursive and cursive counterparts, write legibly, demonstrate good posture, read cursive writing, and write in both PreCursive and cursive with rhythm and speed.
How We Teach It
Guidance and Modeling
Handwriting is tactile, experiential: it must be shown, not simply taught. As students expand their handwriting toolkit, continual opportunities arise to model proper writing posture, letter shape, slant, proportion, and more. Students will also be guided to understand the connection between PreCursive characters and their cursive counterparts.
Reinforcement and Sequential Instruction
Students will build on the concepts established in Handwriting 1, continuing to write legibly and with good technique in PreCursive. On this foundation students will learn to write in cursive and continue in vocabulary development. They will also apply these writing skills in various subject areas.
Purposeful Practice
Systematic, purposeful practice helps students develop good handwriting and letter mastery along with the physical motor control and muscle memory needed to write consistently with rhythm and speed. For both PreCursive and cursive, the course focuses on legibility and consistency rather than precise imitation.
Materials
Student Worktext
The student worktext pages provide opportunities for both teacher-guided and independent practice in reading and writing in PreCursive and cursive. Students will consistently review character formation, joining strokes, and correct letter slant and size, and teachers will regularly assess student progress.
Teacher Edition
The teacher edition provides teaching tips and lesson instructions, guidance for teacher modeling, and formative assessment evaluation forms.
