Teaching Math to Solve Real-World Problems

BJU Press Math

Our vision for our math line is to equip students with mathematical skills and strategies for analyzing and solving real-world problems through the application of abstract reasoning within the context of a biblical worldview.

The BJU Press math program uses diverse teaching techniques to ensure students grasp core concepts. Students gain fluency by choosing and applying appropriate procedures for solving problems, using models to understand relationships and structure in mathematics, and predicting outcomes through analytical methods. They develop conceptual and procedural understanding through frequent review of the material and use discussion prompts and step-by-step guides to go beyond rote memorization. Real-world application is achieved through STEM projects that integrate science, engineering, and design.

The BJU Press math program enables students to use mathematics to better fulfill the Creation Mandate. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to examine real-world issues through a biblical lens, develop ethical, biblically grounded solutions, and reflect on mathematical principles as consistent with God’s order.

Materials

Student Edition

The Student Edition includes a clear presentation of concepts, practice exercises that aid student’s understanding, and lessons structured with objectives, real-world connections, and modeling opportunities.

Teacher Edition

The Teacher Edition for each grade contains full-color, reduced-size student pages with overprinted answers. Each lesson opens with a list of objectives and materials needed for that lesson. Additionally, each lesson typically includes suggestions for teacher-directed review, strategies for teaching new concepts, and answers.

Visuals & Student Manipulatives (K5–4)

To build and reinforce understanding, new concepts are introduced in each grade with the use of manipulatives. Both the teacher visuals packet and the student manipulatives packet include items such as pocket charts, number lines, paper coins and bills, rulers, workmats, counters, and geometric shapes, giving the students hands-on practice of concepts. Items may be prepared at the beginning of the school year or as needed for each chapter.

Student Reviews & Activities

Reviews and Activities provide opportunities for extra practice, interactive learning, and concept reinforcement. Teachers may use them for homework, assessment, or cumulative review. As students complete practice activities on the current lesson and spiral reviews of previous concepts, they take a crucial step toward gaining automaticity with the material. Reviews are available for grades 1–5. Activities books are available for grades 7–11.

Assessments

Each assessment packets include age-appropriate quizzes and tests for each chapter, available in both print and digital formats. Additional assessment resources are also available for lower grades and may vary by grade level.
An Assessments Answer Key is also available for each grade.
