Maintaining Academic Excellence:
BJU Press and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS)
Since the publication of its first textbook in 1974, BJU Press has pursued the highest standards of academic excellence. With over 38 years of publishing experience, BJU Press upholds its founding mission—providing trusted materials for Christian education. To help schools needing to work with Common Core State Standards, BJU Press has compiled charts to show where our existing materials correlate with CCSS. At this time, only math and language arts have been addressed in CCSS. However, BJU Press has not changed its position on core philosophy or its own standards of good teaching to meet these CCSS.
Educational Standards: State and National
Broadly speaking, standards in education establish the overall criteria of content that students need to know and the skills that students should be able to perform in the academic subjects for each grade level. As such, standards set a general, agreed-to expectation of proficiency and provide consistency for students who may transfer from one school to another, whether in-state or between states.
For many years BJU Press has consulted national and state standards when developing new textbooks and revising previous editions. Many BJU Press textbooks include charts that illustrate our adherence to national standards wherever possible. We often consult the standards from the “big three” states—Florida, California, and Texas—in addition to consulting standards from other states who are viewed highly for their standards in a particular content area.
In addition, we consider what leading educators in each field of study are recommending to publishers and educators. We review the information in light of our biblical standards, our philosophy of education, our company standards, and project constraints. Moreover, we believe that Christian textbooks should meet or exceed state and national educational standards.
The Common Core Standards
According to its website, the Common Core State Standards were developed to provide a framework for all states to prepare students for college and the workforce. The CCSS website indicates that many states have adopted these standards; we are also aware that some states are reconsidering their usage or reference to these standards. However, it is evident that the CCSS are currently impacting education and will continue to do so in the future.
From a publisher’s perspective, these standards are merely an additional set of standards for us to consult as we continue to provide for the academic needs of students and schools. Many of the Common Core State Standards highlight our already established and longstanding goals of teaching for understanding and developing critical-thinking skills. By referencing the appropriate CCSS, BJU Press further fulfills its commitment to provide our customers with quality textbooks that will help meet their academic obligations, while maintaining our unique distinctives.
Guided by our mission, BJU Press will continue to produce textbooks with our uniquely balanced pedagogical philosophy, rigorous academics, and our strong emphasis on the various levels of biblical integration. While referencing various academic standards, BJU Press remains unchanged in its underlying educational philosophy: to help train Christlike students to excel in life, in work, and in witness.
