BJ LINC Spanish 1 Course Description

Spanish 1 presents the basics of the Spanish language as it is spoken in Latin America. The course balances conversational skills with understanding of grammatical concepts. Topics covered include basic vocabulary, greetings, present tense conjugation, introduction of preterite tense and imperatives, object pronouns, pronunciation rules, and basic syntactical structures. Audio-visual demonstrations, group participation, and gradual use of Spanish by the teacher reinforce conversational skills. Students also learn foreign language study skills, memorize Bible verses, and survey Spanish-speaking cultures.

Course Level: Grades 9–12

Prerequisites: Basic understanding of English grammar

Meet the BJ LINC Spanish 1 Teacher

Mr. J.D. Cancino, B.A., was born in Mexico and came to the United States as a young teenager. Soon after that, he became a Christian. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bob Jones University and is enrolled in the Master of Divinity program at the Bob Jones Jr. Memorial Seminary. Before teaching, he worked for the BJ LINC Department team as an assistant.

Mr. Cancino’s introduction to foreign languages came through his experience in learning English as a second language as a high school student. He came to love languages by studying biblical ancient languages and by further studying English and Spanish. He has enjoyed teaching since high school, when he had opportunities to tutor friends in English as a second language. He and his wife, Renee, have two small children, Joshua and Ethan. His favorite pastimes are spending time with family, playing the violin, and reading. His favorite verse is Efesios 1:3, “Bendito sea el Dios y Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, que nos bendijo con toda bendición espiritual en los lugares celestiales en Cristo” (Ephesians 1:3, "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ").
