BJU Press Distance Learning works great with a DVD recorder!

A DVD recorder (or DVR, Digital Video Recorder) is a great option for BJU Press Distance Learning subscribers.  If you are considering purchasing a DVD recorder to use for your BJU Press Distance Learning recording needs, below are some basic features to look for.

  1. We recommend using DVD-R media (instead of DVD+R).
  2. A DVD recorder with a built-in hard disk drive (HDD) is the best option.*
This allows you to record many hours to the HDD without having to switch disks between programs.  You can then add chapter points if desired, and ‘burn’ the program to a blank DVD-R or DVD-RW for playback in another DVD player.**  A 160 GB HDD can hold over 200 hours at the lowest quality setting.
  3. Make sure the DVD recorder has at least 32 timer settings.  (Some have only 8, which will probably not be enough.)
  4. Simultaneous play and record enables you to watch a DVD while recording a program to the HDD.

Reminder: You are expected to discontinue use of recorded content upon termination of your subscription, as per your user agreement.

*Some HDD recorders use TiVo, and we frequently receive questions about this service.  TiVo does not benefit BJU Press Distance Learning subscribers, so do not get talked into purchasing this type of system if you do not want it.  Before buying TiVo, be sure you fully understand how it works and the subscription fees involved with it.

**Occasionally, some DVD players may experience compatibility problems with  DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW.  If you are concerned about DVD compatibility with your existing DVD players, be sure you have the option of returning the recorder.
