Can I receive BJU Press Distance Learning using my DISH Network or DirecTV dish?

No, you will need to use the dish provided or recommended by BJU Press Distance Learning. The LNB on the dish needs to meet the specifications for our signal and the dish needs to be at least .87 meter.

Will my DISH Network or DirecTV system interfere with BJU Press Distance Learning?

No, the different systems point to different satellites and will not necessarily interfere. Of course, your BJU Press Distance Learning dish will not point through any object (even another dish).

Can I use any satellite receiver to receive BJU Press Distance Learning?

No, you will need to use the receiver provided by BJU Press Distance Learning. Our receiver is set for the specific frequency of our signal and is equipped with a Smart Card that allows access to the programming. Our signal is not free-to-air.

Can I receive any other programming with your hardware?

Our hardware is designed to receive our signal only. The receiver is dedicated to pick up and convert the direct BJU Press Distance Learning signal. We currently carry 4 video channels.

What size is your dish and why is it that size?

The dish we use is 35" in diameter. We use this dish in order to pick up the highest quality signal, which provides you with a quality picture and clear audio. This larger dish allows you to find our satellite more easily than with a smaller dish. We have tested smaller dishes but were not satisfied with the quality of the signal, so we have chosen to stay with the current dish.

What if my homeowners association or landlord will not allow me to put up a dish any larger than 18 inches?

The FCC has already addressed this issue with rule 47 C.F.R. Section 1.4000 which has been in effect since October 14, 1996. The rule “prohibits restrictions that impair a viewer's ability to install, maintain, or use a video antenna. The rule applies to state or local laws or regulations, including zoning, land-use or building regulations, private covenants, homeowners' association rules, condominium or cooperative association restrictions, lease restrictions, or similar restrictions on property within the exclusive use or control of the antenna user where the user has an ownership or leasehold interest in the property. A restriction impairs if it: 1) unreasonably delays or prevents use of, 2) unreasonably increases the cost of, or 3) precludes a viewer from receiving an acceptable quality signal from, one of these antennas. The rule does not prohibit legitimate safety restrictions or restrictions designed to preserve designated or eligible historic or prehistoric properties, provided the restriction is no more burdensome than necessary to accomplish the safety or preservation purpose.” For further information on this ruling please visit the FCC website.

Does your system use digital or analog technology?

The BJU Press Distance Learning satellite hardware uses Ku-band digital technology. The receiver is designed specifically to pick up our digital signal off of the Galaxy 26 satellite.

Where does your direct signal reach?

Our satellite signal from the G-26 satellite reaches the 48 contiguous states as well as Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and parts of the Caribbean. However, if you live in one of these areas outside of the 48 contiguous states and are interested in receiving BJU Press Distance Learning, please call our Technical Support at 1-800-845-5731 for some important information about receiving our signal.

If I don't have (or don't want to have) a TV, can I hook up a TV monitor or computer monitor to view BJU Press Distance Learning?

Usually either type of monitor will work; however, there may be some extra cables and adapters needed. If you are interested in this type of setup, you will need to contact a local electronics store for advice on how to use any non-TV type monitor when viewing BJU Press Distance Learning.

You sent me a Smart Card. Do I need to keep it in the receiver all of the time?

Yes, the card should remain in the receiver at all times. The entitlement for your receiver to view our programming is controlled through the Smart Card. Without it you will not be able to view our programming.

Can I purchase used hardware from a previous BJU Press Distance Learning customer?

Yes, but you will need to send in a ‘Used Hardware Subscription’ form. Please call 800-845-5731 or e-mail hsatinfo@bjupress.com to request a form. Remember that used hardware does not have a warranty.

My receiver is displaying the message bE 1 = in the oval window. I can’t see a picture, and the receiver won’t respond to any commands. What should I do?

Your receiver will need to be replaced. Call Technical Support at 800-845-5731 or e-mail hsattech@bjupress.com to request a replacement and receive return instructions for the defective receiver.

I have known power fluctuations at my house. What should I do?

Power fluctuations could cause the receiver to fail. We recommend using a UPS (uninterruptable power supply) between the receiver and electrical source to regulate incoming power and protect against surges.

What are some general things to do to protect my receiver?

It is important to have your system properly grounded. You need to have the dish and the incoming RG-6 COAX cable grounded (see page 20 in the Satellite Installation Guide). Also, keep your receiver uncovered and well ventilated (we recommend 4-6 inches open above the receiver). Refrain from putting anything on top of the receiver, and protect it from excess dust.

I have version 5:15 B11. I used to have a good signal and picture, but now I see a black screen with the message “No (or bad) signal.” What should I do?

You need to upgrade the software and reset your receiver by following the instructions under SOFTWARE VERSION 5:15 B11.
